Any day is a good day to honor mom, but Mother's Day is the perfect opportunity to show just how much you care and celebrate all she’s done for you. Wondering what to do for her on this special day? Here are five great ideas.
1. Discover Art On a Studio Tour
Organized by Big Medium, the West Austin Studio Tour is an annual event showcasing the work of local artists. Meet with some of Austin's most unique creators through workshops, receptions, installations and competitions. It takes place May 13–14 and 20–21. More than 176 studios will participate, and you can venture from venue to venue on a self-guided tour.
2. Enjoy a Spa Day
Treat your mother to a pedicure, massage and full spa treatment at one of Austin's best spas. Halina European Salon is just a few minutes from Springs at Round Rock, and they’re offering Mother's Day specials throughout the month of May. Austin Nails and Spa, located in the Lakeline Plaza near Springs at Lakeline, also offers specialty services like their Milk & Honey Pedicure.
3. Sip Some Cocktails
Whether your mom prefers a dry martini or a fruity mojito, sipping a cocktail or two is a relaxing way to celebrate the special day. Weather Up, an offshoot of a popular NYC cocktail bar, serves handcrafted cocktails in a vintage atmosphere. They also offer a delicious brunch on Saturdays and Sundays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you're looking for something more swanky, treat your mom to a drink at Half Step. They make a delicious daiquiri, and the bartender will even craft a custom drink to her liking.
4. Take a Cooking Class
Faraday's Kitchen Store regularly offers cooking classes where you can learn hands-on skills and craft a delicious meal to share. On Saturday, May 13 (the day before Mother's Day), they're offering a Terrific Tex-Aus Tacos Class, teaching you how to make Cajun shrimp tacos and chimichurri beef tacos. The class lasts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and you can sign up on Faraday's website.
5. Experience Fine Dining
When was the last time you and your mother enjoyed an elegant meal together? Austin is home to many exquisite fine dining restaurants. For upscale American fare, treat her to dinner at Barley Swine. They offer a chef's tasting experience with 10 creative courses, each made with ingredients from local farms.
For Mediterranean fare, you can't go wrong with Lenoir, an upscale eatery with a European and Mediterranean-inspired menu that changes seasonally. They even have a backyard wine garden where you and your mother can enjoy shareable plates and delicious wine without a reservation.
