Located right along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, Corpus Christi is known for its connection to the ocean. As a matter of fact, of the 452 square miles that the city covers, more than two-thirds is water! Not to mention the 113 miles of Gulf Coast beaches. That being said, it’s no surprise that sailing is one of the most popular activities for the city’s residents. With more than 327 square miles of some of the most pristine waters in the U.S., it would almost be a shame to NOT take advantage of it.

For those of you without sailing experience or connections, however, we’ve compiled a list of some of the city’s best sailing schools. There are a variety of different programs for all experiences and age levels, but be sure to check out these 3 places:

Learn to Sail Texas

Want to learn how to sail in the matter of a weekend? Learn to Sail Texas offers several different weekend courses for all learning levels – each in accordance with the American Sailing Association’s (ASA) standards. In their ASA 101 Basic Keelboat course, students are taught the basics of sailing lingo, boat parts, knots and rigging, how to sail, and more. Students will spend the morning in the classroom learning the basics and the afternoon out on the water applying what they’ve learned. The course costs $297, with all textbooks, registration fees, certification fees, and ASA enrollment fees included, and lasts two days. For more information, please visit their website.

Corpus Christi Yacht Club

For adults looking to teach the art of sailing to their kids, the Corpus Christi Yacht Club’s “Learn to Sail” program is offered for beginning, intermediate, and advanced sailors ages 8 to 16. Best of all, you don’t have to be a member of the CCYC to participate. Each program takes 2 weeks to complete, but students can participate in multiple classes over the course of the summer. At the end of their class, students will then be eligible to join a junior race team. Classes start at 8:30 am and end at 3:00 pm each day, with aftercare available until 4:30 pm for an extra fee. For more information, please visit their website.
