Over the years, sushi has grown from a trendy novelty to an established part of the dining scene across the country. Have you become a fan of this healthy cuisine that's fun to eat? Maybe you still haven't taken the plunge. Either way, here are some of our favorite sushi restaurants in Corpus Christi that you should check out.

Takeniwa Asian Fusion Bistro
5216 S. Padre Island Drive

The koi ponds in the front of the restaurant set the tone for the pleasant ambiance suitable for dinner with friends or a romantic date night. In addition to traditional sushi and sashimi choices such as tuna and sea urchin, the menu includes dozens of intriguing rolls with names like Mexican, Snow White and Cherry Blossom. Be sure to go back for the hibachi, which is as much an entertainment spectacular as it is delicious dining.

Origami Japanese Cuisine
1220 Airline

Origami prides itself on being the only authentic Japanese owned-and-operated restaurant in Corpus Christi since 1990. Try the Sushi Pizza Roll made with crab, wasabi sauce, cream cheese and regular cheese, or the Wayne Hand Roll with flying fish roe and tuna.

Aka Japanese Steakhouse
5301 Everhart Road

Chef Boyd gets high marks from customers for his creative take on sushi and his friendly presence behind the bar. Enjoy the presentation of Smokey Mountain and Fire Dragon Rolls that are served in flames. The Aka House Roll with tuna, salmon, whitefish, hamachi, crab, masago and avocado is like a bite-sized buffet. Stop in for Happy Hour from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday for specials on sushi and sashimi along with beer, wine and sake.

Rock and Rolls Sushi Lounge
15121 S. Padre Island Drive

The clever name also refers to the classic rock that plays in the background at this warm and inviting restaurant. Their inventive selection of sushi rolls features one with grilled Wagyu beef, cucumber, avocado and scallions. If you can take the heat, try one with katsu jalapeño, cream cheese and wakame salad topped with avocado and finished off with drizzles of sriracha, spicy mayo and eel sauce.
