corpus-christi-giving“It’s better to give than it is to receive.” It’s a phrase I’m sure you’ve all heard many times before, and one that echoes constantly throughout the holiday season. For many people, the holidays are the perfect time to donate to charity, because they’re reminded of the need to help the less fortunate. Local charities do an incredible amount of work during the holiday season to help others, and they rely on the generous donations and volunteer work from ordinary people to get the job done. We should all think of ways to share our time, talents, and treasures with those who need them the most this holiday season, and to help you do so, we’ve put together a list of Corpus Christi charities that are worth supporting:

1. Mother Teresa Shelter, Inc
513 Sam Rankin Avenue

Corpus Christi, TX 78401
(361) 883-7372

If you’re familiar with the story of Mother Teresa, then you know all about her mission to help the poor. At the Mother Teresa Shelter in Corpus Christi, their mission is to provide community-based outreach services to homeless individuals and families by creating opportunities that help break the cycle of homelessness. They provide food, shelter, counseling, and job opportunities for local homeless people, so that they can get back on their own two feet. You can support their efforts here.

2. Driscoll Children’s Hospital
3533 South Alameda Street

Corpus Christi, TX 78411
(361) 694-5000

It’s never easy seeing other people in pain, especially when those people are children. At Driscoll Children’s Hospital, volunteer workers work diligently to put a smile on the face of children and their families who are undergoing lifesaving medical procedures. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available, but you must fill out this application before you can start. Likewise, you can make a monetary donation here.

3. Gulf Coast Humane Society
3118 Cabaniss Parkway
Corpus Christi, TX 78415
(361) 225-0845

Since 1947, the Gulf Coast Humane Society has been taking orphaned animals under their wing and giving them a loving home. It’s South Texas’ largest no-kill animal shelter, and is home to hundreds of adorable animals that come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you’d like to volunteer, help with foster care, or simply make a donation, there are plenty of ways to help the Humane Society keep up the good work. In fact, you can check out their Donation Wish List here.

4. Youth Odyssey
4227 Interstate 37

Odem, TX 78370
(361) 946-6016

Youth Odyssey is a nonprofit program dedicated to providing positive youth development to at-risk children, ages 10-17, through mentorship programs and adventure activities. By involving these young community members in summer camps, kayak trips, and other team building activities, they help these children navigate through the challenges in their lives and realize a brighter future by overcoming their present circumstances. To learn more about becoming a mentor and volunteering, please visit their website above. Otherwise, you can also make a donation here.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the holiday shopping frenzy and asking for presents, the best part about the holidays is simply helping others and spreading joy. You can’t put a price on making someone genuinely happy, and there’s no better feeling than watching someone’s face light up in happiness and appreciation.
