The Top 5 Things to Do in Des Moines and Waukee on July 4th!

Our team came up with some of our favorite things to do in Des Moines on July 4th and thought we would share our top 5 ideas to get things cracking and popping for you.

  1. Off to the Races. Get a head-start on the holiday and make your way down to the Prairie Meadows Casino Racetrack and Hotel from July 1st to July 3rd for a weekend of music and live horse racing. Don't miss the fireworks at dusk on Monday, July 3rd to finish off a patriotic weekend.
  2. Old-Fashioned Fourth at Living History Farms. If you frequently catch yourself saying things like "they just don't make 'em like they used to," this may be the perfect event for you and your friends and family. Immerse yourself in a tradition-steeped tribute to the U.S. by participating in events like foot races, pie eating contests and spelling bees. Historic entertainment includes an 1875-rules baseball game. Community members at Springs at Jordan Creek in West Des Moines only have to make a 15-minute trek along Hickman Road to enjoy this classic celebration at Living History Farms
  3. The Des Moines Symphony's 24th Annual Yankee Doodle Pops. Join your Des Moines neighbors this July 3rd for patriot music on the Iowa State Capitol grounds at this beloved annual event. Bring blankets, chairs and your picnic basket so you can relax while watching the Des Moines skyline, hearing music set to evoke the sights and sounds of our great country, and soaking up the fantastic spirit that this event brings out in everyone.
  4. The Waukee Fourth of July Celebration. This Fourth of July Celebration offers all the classics and something for everyone. The festivities kick off at 3 p.m. with the parade that starts in the historic downtown area and ends at Centennial Park. Great food, live music and fireworks at dusk round out the day. Springs at Waukee residents are a mere 2-miles from this local Fourth of July Celebration.
  5. The Urbandale 4th of July Celebration. Considered by many the best and largest of 4th of July celebrations in the Greater Des Moines area, festivities start on Saturday, July 1st and power through until Tuesday, July 4th. Enjoy carnival rides, live music, games and more over the weekend. Tuesday the 4th is chock full of American goodness and non-stop fun, starting with a pancake breakfast to fuel up for the day's events that include a 5K race, parade, soccer game, car show, jazz band and fireworks display.
