Sports_Teams_OKC.jpgIf you want to really feel connected to your new city, one of the best ways to do it is to get behind local sports teams. From area high school teams to the pros, residents of Oklahoma City are sure to be entertained by some of the best athletes the region has to offer.

Here are five of the best Oklahoma City area sports teams to consider following:

1. Oklahoma City Thunder

While the franchise has been around for more than 40 years (as the Seattle Supersonics), the team relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008. Since this move, the Thunder have had some success, such as winning their first division title in the 2010-11 season and first Western Conference Championship in 2011-12. Point guard Russell Westbrook is one of the best players in the NBA, and should lead the team to another playoff appearance this season.

We're right in the thick of basketball season, so be sure to catch a game at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

2. Oklahoma Sooners

Just a short drive from Springs at May Lakes and Springs at Memorial is the University of Oklahoma. While OU offers a wealth of talented collegiate teams, their football program is one not to be missed. This past football season the Oklahoma Sooners finished first in the Big 12 conference, and they have historically been a football powerhouse.

3. Energy FC

This professional men's soccer team began its inaugural season in Oklahoma City as part of the United Soccer League in 2014. The matches are played at Taft Stadium, which recently underwent a major renovation to expand its seating capacity to 18,000. If you're going to catch a game, be sure to check out a matchup against their biggest rival—Tulsa Roughnecks FC.

4. Bishop McGuinness Fighting Irish

One of the best high school football programs in the state of Oklahoma is right here in Oklahoma City. This past season the Fighting Irish went 7-0 in the district and 12-2 overall. The school has been recognized for its outstanding athletic program on a national level and was even recognized by Sports Illustrated in 2008 as having one of the top 25 high school athletic programs in the country.

5. Oklahoma City University Stars

Want to catch a baseball game? Come out and be wowed by the Oklahoma City University Stars college baseball team. The NAIA team won the national championship in 2005 and continues its strong performance. Since the team's inception in 1965, the Stars have had 71 Major League draft selections, so you’ll most definitely witness some rising talent when you attend a Stars game.
