If you're a runner, you're probably motivated by a competitive spirit, even (or maybe especially) if you're facing off against yourself. The wonders of technology allow you to make each run a new challenge by tracking and storing data to show your progress.

Check out these amazing apps on our list of favorites. Walkers and bikers, these will work for you too!

Couch to 5K® (iOS, Android)

Would you like to become a runner but you don't know where to start? True to its name, this app will have you ready to run a 5K in nine weeks, even if you haven't run since grade school. For only $1.99, your virtual "trainer" will take you each step of the way.

Endomondo (iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone)

Social media has become woven into everyday life, and fitness is no exception. In addition to providing real-time tracking and maintaining your workout history, Endomondo allows you interact with others by adding and tagging pictures, getting pep talks from friends, and joining community challenges or setting up your own. Weekend warriors can track kayaking, skiing and more than 40 other sports with this free app.

Road ID (iOS)

No matter how familiar you are with your routes, accidents can happen. Road ID transmits electronic breadcrumbs that friends and family can follow, sending an SOS message including your location if you stop moving for five minutes. Keep an "eye" on your kids as they travel to school or a friend's house. A personalized lock screen stores three In Case of Emergency (ICE) numbers as well as allergies, blood type and other vital health information.

Runkeeper (iOS, Android)

More than 45 million users monitor their progress with Runkeeper. The free app uses your phone's GPS to track your runs and log stats such as speed and calories burned. For $9.99 per month or an annual fee of $39.99, Runkeeper Go will give you personalized workouts and recommended training plans along with a virtual DJ that matches your running rhythm to your playlist.

Zombies, Run! (iOS, Android)

How fast would you run if you were being followed by a group of the walking dead? Find out with Zombies, Run! as you become a post-epidemic survivor on a mission to gather supplies and rescue other humans. The basic app is free, with available add-ons ranging from $1.99 to $19.99.
