Here are five things to keep in mind when looking for a pet-friendly apartment home:

1. Keep Your Papers in Order

As a pet owner, there are several types of documentation you should keep on file. Set aside a dedicated folder for these items so you always have the necessary paperwork on hand for your veterinarian, groomer, landlord, insurance company, and anyone else who might need it:

  • Veterinary records
  • Vaccination records
  • Documentation of spay/neuter status
  • Obedience training certification
2. Consider Your Breed Carefully

If you’re thinking about adopting a new pet while living in an apartment home, it’s important to think about the breed. Many apartment communities have restrictions on particularly large or aggressive dog breeds, while other are permitted on special conditions. At Springs Apartments, these conditional breeds must pass an “interview” with a leasing agent at the apartment community and owners must provide proof of professional obedience training.

3. Budget for Additional Expenses

Most apartment communities require an additional deposit for pets that can be used for cleaning and repairs associated with your pet once you move out, as well as a monthly pet fee. This is used to help maintain pet-friendly amenities such as the two leash-free pet playgrounds you’ll find at Springs at Bee Ridge, or the doggie DNA program, which helps control pet waste at all of our communities.

4. Check the Fine Print for Insurance

If you have pets, be sure to have an appropriate amount of liability coverage on your renter’s insurance policy. If you have a large aquarium, for example, you’ll want additional liability coverage for potential leaks or water damage associated with the tank.

5. Small Pets Have Rules Too

Many renters assume pet restrictions only apply to cats and dogs, but there are rules for all types of pets. In our Springs Apartments communities, all birds and exotic pets must be kept in the appropriate cage, tank, or aquarium.
