Runkeeper (iOS, Android)

More than 45 million users can't be wrong. No matter what level of experience you have, Runkeeper can help you attain your goals. The free app uses your phone's GPS to track your runs and log stats such as speed and calories burned. For $9.99 per month or an annual fee of $39.99, Runkeeper Go will give you personalized workouts,
recommended training plans, and let you share your real-time progress on Facebook and Twitter.

Endomondo (iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone)

Do you thrive on competition? Are you motivated by workout buddies? Endomondo wants to make running fun by enhancing the social aspect. In addition to providing real-time tracking and maintaining your workout history, the free app allows you to add and tag pictures, get pep talks from friends, and join community challenges or set up your own. Weekend warriors can track kayaking, skiing and more than 40 other sports.

Road ID (iOS)

No matter how fit you are, safety should always be a priority. Road ID transmits electronic breadcrumbs that friends and family can follow. If you stop moving for five minutes, it sends an SOS message including your location. Keep an "eye" on your kids as they travel to school or a friend's house. A personalized lock screen stores three In Case of Emergency (ICE) numbers as well as allergies, blood type and other vital health information.

Couch to 5K® (iOS, Android)

Even if the only running you do is to the kitchen during halftime of the game, for just $1.99 this app will have you ready to run a 5K in nine weeks. Track and log your workouts, sync playlists and choose your own virtual "coach."

Zombies, Run! (iOS, Android)

Does running sometimes feel monotonous? You may feel differently if you're being chased by a horde of the undead. Zombies, Run! turns you into a post-epidemic survivor on a mission to gather supplies and rescue other humans. The basic app is free, with available add-ons ranging from $1.99 to $19.99.
