Get Ready for Back to School in Twin Cities.jpgWith the kids going back to school in just a few short weeks, you're probably like so many other parents and buying new clothes for them. In many cases, their old clothing is probably not very worn. Instead of simply throwing it away or packing up until you find someone to give it to, we've tracked down a few places in Des Moines that you where can donate any gently used clothing you have in your home.

1. Bidwell Riverside Center's Clothing Pantry

Located at 1203 Hartford Avenue in Des Moines, the Clothing Pantry gives away its donations of gently-used or new clothing to families in need. You can drop off your clean and undamaged clothing at the back door of the Bidwell Riverside Center's clothing and food pantry during the following hours:

  • Monday: 8 AM to 6 PM
  • Tuesday: 8 AM to 5 PM
  • Wednesday: 8 AM to 4 PM
  • Thursday: 8 AM to 4 PM
  • Friday: 8 AM to 4 PM

2. West Des Moines Human Services Clothes Closet

Residents of Urbandale, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights who are elderly, disabled and/or low income can obtain assistance from the Clothes Closet overseen by West Des Moines Human Services. With office hours from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, the agency accepts clothing and small household items that are gently used and clean.

3. Central Iowa Shelter & Services

At the Central Iowa Shelter & Services, they offer free emergency shelter to more than 2,000 women and men each year. In addition to programs that are designed to help them address their homelessness and move past it, the Central Iowa Shelter & Services also passes out necessities such as clothing, cleaning supplies, towels, coffee and more. Your donations can be dropped off at 142 Mulberry Street in Des Moines.

4. Dress for Success

Focused on helping women living in poverty gain employment, Dress for Success accepts donations of professional attire and interview clothing. Examples of items the organization is looking for include scarves, skirts, suits, dresses, suits, jewelry, blouses and shoes -- especially those with a low- to medium-high heel and that are black in color. Dress for Success generally accepts donations on Mondays from 10 AM until noon with the occasional Saturday. You can take donations to 6000 Grae Street in Des Moines.
