How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution in OKC

December 18, 2017

Keep New Year Resolution in Oklahoma CityAs the New Year approaches, many people are starting to mull over their goals for the new year. How do you want to make 2018 different? Improve your chances of keeping those resolutions with these tips for a successful approach to the fresh year ahead.

1. Choose One Manageable Goal

Don’t go overboard with your New Year’s resolutions, hoping for a complete lifestyle makeover with the flip of the calendar. Stick to a single goal and keep it as specific and manageable as possible. “Get healthy,” is far too vague for a resolution. However, you might resolve to lose 10 pounds, stop drinking soda or get six servings of vegetables each day. The more realistic your goal, the easier it is to achieve.

2. Set Key Milestones and Rewards

Set specific milestones that you want to hit along the way toward your final goal. This will help you track your progress and maintain forward momentum. If your goal is to lose 10 pounds, decide when you’d like to drop the first two, the second two, and so on. If you’re hoping to read a dozen new books this year, make sure you’re halfway through your first one by the middle of January and on track with one title slated for each month.

Determine how you’ll reward yourself for achieving these milestones. Having a reward system set up will help you enjoy a sense of accomplishment along the way. If you’re trying to lose weight, reward yourself with a new outfit when you drop a size. If you’re working to master a new skill, such as knitting, reward yourself with some new tools or craft supplies. Determine what your rewards are now and set aside resources, like a craft store gift card, so you can follow through with them later.

3. Identify Your Resources

What resources are in place in the area to help you achieve your goals? Check out local gyms around Oklahoma City so you know where to go when it’s time to start sweating off those pounds. If you want to start spending more time with family and friends, make a list of great OKC restaurants to try or local highlights you’d like to hit with your crowd.

4. Enlist Support

Going public with your resolution is intimidating, but it’s a great way to improve your chances of success. A workout buddy will come by and make sure you’re ready for a trip to the gym and not lounging on the couch. A blog about your cooking adventures may inspire you to keep going as you get feedback from others about how inspiring your recipes are. Reach out and get others involved with your goals however you can.
