It's time to celebrate National Retro Day. Observed on February 27th, San Antonio has lots of things to do to get ready for National Retro Day. Think of it as your opportunity to have some fun and take a step back in time. What's your favorite time period or era? If you're like most people, the word "retro" includes those periods of time before the internet was widespread and everyone had a smartphone. Below are our suggestions for celebrating Retro Day 2018 in San Antonio.
1. Dress the Part
Whether the Roaring 20s with its flapper dresses and bowler hats is your favorite era or you love the Micheal Jackson-inspired moonwalking 1980s, dressing the part will instantly help you feel like part of Retro Day. Here are a few suggestions on where to head for the right duds:
Open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 AM until 6 PM, Montage is where you'll find meticulously curated men's and women's clothing. Stylish and at least two decades old, the clothes at Montage can be accentuated with their selection of accessories, jewelry and more.
Operated out of a structure -- a 1969 Avion Travelcade trailer -- that can only be called vintage itself, the Grey Moon Village carries a diverse selection of specially curated women's and men's vintage clothing and accessories. The business, located in downtown San Antonio, also carries their own in-house brand of handmade candles.
While they don't sell mermaids here, the Mermaid Farm is a place where you can find vintage clothing from the 1920s through the 1980s. Located in the Southtown area of San Antonio at 2112 South Presa, you can those items that will take you way back and set you apart from the brand name wearing crowd of today.
2. Get Your Hair in the Mood
If you think your normal hair care routine takes a lot of product and time to get it just right, try a retro hairstyle on for size. Whip your hair back into a greasy ducktail for a 60s look or tease it to within an inch of its life with lots of backcombing and hairspray for a look that rivals any 80s hair band.
3. Step Away from the Electronic Devices
It's hard to believe today but less than 20 years ago, people didn't have a smartphone glued to their ear or hand most hours of the day. For Retro Day, give your smartphone a well-deserved break, resolve to stay off social media and just enjoy face-to-face interactions.
4. Have a Party!
Sure, Retro Day falls on a Tuesday but that doesn't mean that you can't have a laidback party with some friends. Invite everyone to wear clothing from their favorite retro era and have them bring a dish to share that was popular during that time period. Or choose a particular era as the theme and ask your friends to get creative with food from the time period.
