Diners across America have embraced the taco as one of the country's most popular foods. They're delicious and fun to eat, whether you get them from a food truck or a full-service restaurant.
But San Antonio is known for having some of the best and most authentic tacos you'll find anywhere. Here are some of our favorite taco spots around our Springs San Antonio communities.
1. Los Gallos Taco HouseTacos for breakfast? Start your day with one of more than two dozen varieties on the menu at Los Gallos. They have traditional ingredients such as eggs, bacon and sausage, or you can be adventurous and try fajita, barbacoa or even a pork chop taco. Prices start at just $1.90 with guacamole and pico for an additional 50¢ each. Los Gallos is open until 2 p.m. seven days a week.
2. Lupe TortillaYou know you're in for a treat at Lupe Tortilla when you start out with complimentary chips with beans and salsa. Add some of the delicious guacamole made tableside. Tacos al Carbon are made with their signature chicken fajitas, or they have a version made with portobello mushrooms for vegetarians. Corn and flour tortillas are made in-house. Meet up with friends at their weekday Happy Hour from 3 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
3. Mariscos del PuertoSeafood and Mexican flavors make a great combination at Mariscos del Puerto. Tacos are only $3.95 and the creative options include Camaron del Tio, with shrimp, onions, mushrooms and avocado in chipotle cream sauce, or El Bacalao, with tempura cod, jicama slaw, jalapeños and mayo. Add beans, vegetables or rice starting at $1.50 each. Mariscos del Puerto is open until 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
4. Las PalapasTexas meets SoCal at this popular spot within walking distance of Springs at Bandera. The menu features puffy tacos, a San Antonio favorite where masa dough is fried to create a shell that's crispy outside and soft inside. Follow them on Facebook for the "Roll Back" specials like 99¢ chicken tacos. In a hurry? The drive-through window is open until 10 p.m.
5. Picosito Mexican CuisineIf you can't find the taco you want at Picosito, it probably doesn't exist. They offer seven types of breakfast tacos for only $1.45, and more than a dozen specialty tacos starting at $1.95. Choices include chicharrón (pork cracklings), beef or pork asada, and guisada, a flavorful stew. Picosito is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week.
