(December 17, 2015)

WalkingRunning_Trails_San_Antonio.jpgWalking and running are two of the more effective and accessible exercise forms available. They require no special equipment, and the only investment needed is a good pair of shoes.

Another great benefit of these workouts is that they can be done almost anywhere. Stay motivated and enjoy the variety when you alternate your schedule among these top walking and running locations in San Antonio.

River Walk

Yes, at first thought it may seem the only thing that gets a workout at the River Walk is your wallet. In reality, the flat surfaces, lighted trails and beautiful scenery make this iconic attraction a favorite of runners and walkers. Give yourself some extra motivation and plan to meet a friend for dinner or drinks afterwards.

Mission Reach Trail

This offshoot of the River Walk takes on a historic feel as it passes the city's four awe-inspiring missions. Thanks to the ecosystem restoration project that created the trail, it has beautiful scenery along with helpful amenities such as restrooms and drinking fountains. The non-looping trail extends for nine miles from Roosevelt Park to the missions, so you can plan a route of up to 18 miles.

Stone Oak Park

Similar to Woodlawn Lake Park, there are various fitness stations throughout, and even a small amphitheater. No need to get in your car - this park is walking distance from Springs.

Salado Creek Greenway

This stunning part of San Antonio's Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails network has five different areas to accommodate any level of activity. The Covington trail is an easy 2.3 miles over a predominantly flat path that includes views of towering hardwood trees and natural springs flowing into the creek. Take your dog along to the north trail and let him socialize at the nearby McAllister Dog Park when you're done.

Phil Hardburger Park

Phil Hardburger Park is a 311-acre former dairy farm that has been protected from urban development to serve as a nature center and open space for outdoor activities. The park features several trails in various lengths and surfaces where you can often spot deer, rabbits and other wildlife. Leashed dogs are welcome and doggie mitts and trash cans are provided along with drinking fountains for two- and four-legged visitors.

Brackenridge Park

Brackenridge Park, home to the San Antonio Zoo and the Japanese Tea Gardens, is also the site of trails with views of the river and the lush landscape along with plentiful bird-watching opportunities. One of the trails leads you out of the park and through downtown, finally looping around the Alamo.

Woodlawn Lake Park

Park visitors consider Woodlawn Lake one of the city's hidden gems. The picturesque lake is the main attraction, and the trails are clean and well-lit. If you want to add a little variety to your workout, there are eight interactive and stationary fitness stations along the trail by the swimming pool.
