Fortunately, the area is home to many parks where you can participate in an array of outdoor activities, from hiking to swimming. Here's a look at some of the best parks near your Des Moines apartment.

1. Walnut Woods State Park

Located on 260 acres of wooded land along the Raccoon River, Walnut Woods is a great place for spotting both water-dwelling and land-dwelling wildlife. Two and a half miles of flat, well-maintained trails weave through the park, and you'll find picnic areas, fireplaces, and peaceful lookout spots to enjoy as you walk. Rent a canoe or kayak and spend a little time on the water, or bring your bicycle and get some low-impact exercise in a beautiful environment.

2. Gray’s Lake Park

Gray’s Lake Park is located on the site of a former gravel excavation project. The resulting lake is stocked with fish including catfish, crappie and largemouth bass, with fishing permitted near the pedestrian bridge and boat docks. If you're not interested in fishing, visit the beach area to take a swim or spend time laying in the sun. Sailboat and canoe rentals are also available, and a 1.9 mile trail encircles the lake and is great for walking or biking.

3. Papajohn Sculpture Park

Located in downtown Des Moines, this park opened in 2009 and is home to the artwork of 22 esteemed artists. As you stroll through the 4.4-acre park, you'll get to experience 28 different sculptures, all of which were donated to the Des Moines Art Center by John and Mary Papajohn. Guided tours are offered April through October, but you need to schedule your tour in advance online.

4. Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens

20 minutes from Springs at Waukee

Maintained by the Chinese Cultural Center of America in cooperation with the Botanical Center, these Asian gardens feature a beautiful pond and landscaped areas along the banks of the Des Moines River. As you take a stroll through the park, you'll also see many sculptures and unique, handcrafted lanterns. Visiting is a great way to experience a touch of another culture while also enjoying the great outdoors.

5. Ewing Park

Ewing Park is perfect for families with kids and for disc golf lovers. The park features an 18-hole disc golf course, playgrounds, and shelters where you can enjoy a lovely picnic. There's also a dog park where you and your furry friend can spend some outdoor time.
