1. Iowa Art Quilters Exhibit
Ankeny Art Center

This weekly show runs through September 28 and takes place Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The exhibit showcases the fact that quilts can do far more than lay on a bed. You can add life and interest to any space by taking a different approach and hanging them on the wall. Viewers can examine a variety of stitches, fabrics, embellishments, and designs. Stop by and take your concept of quilting to a new level.

2. Des Moines’ Downtown Farmers’ Market

3rd & Court Ave, Des Moines

The Des Moines farmers’ market is a weekly delight, open every Saturday through October 29. Get your start early because the market is only open from 7 a.m. to noon. There are nearly 300 vendors on hand with everything from seasonal produce to baked goods to handcrafted jewelry and handmade homewares. Whether you’re looking for exotic mushrooms or a tablecloth with custom embroidery, you can find what you’re after at this eclectic event.

3. World Food & Music Festival

Downtown Des Moines

Mark your calendar from September 16 to 18 for a must-try local experience. The 12th Annual World Food & Music Festival brings a beloved event back to the city, with live entertainment, intriguing cooking demonstrations, and a variety of delicious bites to try. You can enjoy a small taste of a new flavor for just $1, or try the whole entrée for $5 or less. The event is free.

4. Thursday Night in the Garden
Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
909 Robert D Ray Dr, Des Moines

Visit the botanical gardens from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on September 29 for a charming experience. Steve Charlson and Julius Brooks will perform live amid the beautiful gardens. This jazz duo will provide the perfect backdrop for an evening strolling the paths, admiring the foliage, and playing lawn games. The event is free with your admission ticket to the gardens.

5. Des Moines Annual Oktoberfest
Historic Court District
119 4th St, Des Moines

Enjoy authentic flavors of Germany at Des Moines’ 13th Annual Oktoberfest September 23 and 24. If you want access to the largest selection of German beer at the event, come dressed in German garb so you can get into the exclusive Lederhosen Lounge. If you’re not in the mood for beer, you’ll find German wines available as well. Head to the live stage to see an extensive polka lineup, or visit the Rooftop Bier Garden for special events like bobbing for apfel, stein pong, and hammerschlagen. Admission is $7 for a day or $13 for the weekend.
