6 Ideas for Beating the Heat in New Orleans

July 06, 2016

Beat-the-Heat-NOLA.jpgThe combination of heat and humidity in the New Orleans area can really take the wind out of your sails! Luckily, there are plenty of ways to stay cool and comfortable in your New Orleans apartment home. Here are a few simple suggestions to get you started:

1. Start Each Day With a Smoothie

Sipping an icy, fruity smoothie is sure to cool you off and it's healthy, too. Keep frozen fruit, orange juice, and yogurt on hand so you can start each day off with a homemade smoothie. A simple recipe to try is just 1 cup orange juice, 1/2 cup frozen berries, and 1/2 cup yogurt. Blend until smooth, and enjoy!

2. Put Your Pillowcase in the Freezer

Falling asleep at night can be a struggle when you're feeling hot and sweaty. Try putting your pillowcase in the freezer for about 10 minutes before you go to bed. You'll have a nice, cool surface to lay your head on, so you'll drift off to sleep in comfort.

3. Catch Up on Your Reading

How does reading keep you cool? By keeping you from moving around a lot, of course! The less you move about, the cooler you'll stay, so make summer the season when you finally make some headway on your reading list or work your way through that stack of magazines that's been building up on the coffee table.

4. Stick to Cold Meals

Summer is not the time to bake a chicken or broil a steak. Leave the stove and oven off to avoid adding more heat to your apartment, and instead experiment with recipes for various cold dishes, like salads and sandwiches, cold soups and no-bake desserts.

5. Keep the Blinds Closed

While the idea of letting light stream into your apartment may sound summery, it's not a wise choice when you're trying to stay cool. Especially during the hottest hours of the day—early to mid-afternoon—keeping your blinds shut will keep the hot sunshine from raising the temperature in your apartment. You can open your blinds again in the evening when temperatures drop and enjoy the beauty of the sunset.

6. Chill a Drink in a Hurry

Never again will you be stuck without a cold beverage. Wrap a bottle of your favorite beverage in a wet paper towel, stick it in the freezer, and it will be nicely chilled and ready to cool you off within minutes.
