New Orleans Area Sports Teams You Should Be Following

1. LSU Tigers

The LSU Tigers compete in the western division of the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers enjoyed a successful 2016 season, which concluded with a 29-9 win in the Citrus Bowl over the University of Louisville. Just a few of the talents who played at LSU include current NFL stars Jarvis Landry, Jeremy Hill, and Odell Beckham, Jr.

2. Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns

The Ragin’ Cajuns are another member of the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision. They play in the Sun Belt conference and currently hold 13 conference titles. Their most successful streak was between 2011 and 2015 when they won the New Orleans Bowl four consecutive years. The Ragin’ Cajuns play at Cajun Field at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

3. New Orleans Saints

If you’re a new resident looking for a local NFL team to follow, the New Orleans Saints are an easy choice. The Saints enjoyed a historic season in 2009, winning a team-record 13 games, which ended in a Super Bowl XLIV victory against the Indianapolis Colts. In the 2015 and 2016 seasons, the Saints finished third in the NFC South division.

4. New Orleans Pelicans

Over 14 seasons of play, New Orleans has made the NBA playoffs six times and won one playoff series and one division title. Formerly the New Orleans Hornets, the team changed its name to the Pelicans before the 2013-14 season—giving naming rights to the Hornets back to Charlotte. The team has endured some struggles as of late, but boast one of the best players in the NBA, Anthony Davis, who is always an exciting player to watch.

5. New Orleans Baby Cakes Baseball Team

Originally the Zephyrs, the New Orleans Baby Cakes are debuting their new title in 2017. They’ll open the season on Thursday, April 6 with the fresh moniker when they face the Memphis Redbirds. This Triple A affiliate of the Miami Marlins is part of the Triple Coast League, and play their home games at Shrine on Airline in Metairie.
