3 Tips for Moving a Short Distance in Oklahoma City

While smaller moves like this do eliminate some of the hassle of relocating, it’s still important to plan well so you can execute your move as smoothly as possible. Consider the following three tips:

1. Stay Organized While Packing

Don’t let the convenient distance to your new apartment home fool you into thinking this isn’t a real move. You’re still relocating all of your belongings from one place to another, so it’s important to pack them carefully. Begin collecting boxes a few months before your move so that you have plenty of time to scour Craigslist for giveaways or gather unwanted packing materials from local businesses.

Pack the items that you use least first. Proceed at a slow-but-steady pace during the weeks leading up to your relocation. Carefully label and organize your boxes by room so it’s easy to place them correctly when you get to your destination.

2. Invest in the Right Moving Method

Unless you have a spacious SUV or pickup truck of your own, you’ll want to rent something that can carry a sizable haul for the day. With a short distance move, you can often downsize a bit and opt for two or three smaller trips instead of a single giant haul. However, you don’t want to get too drastic with this approach. If you’re comfortable driving a larger truck and the price is comparable, go all out and move everything at once, regardless of the distance.

3. Prepare for the Unpacking Process

The distance between your old and new home doesn’t really alter your unpacking experience. Though you may move your items from point A to point B much faster, you’ll still have days of arranging, unpacking, and settling in ahead of you. Make sure you keep your essential everyday items separate so you don’t have to open a dozen boxes to get to the things you need most.

Pack a suitcase with clothing and toiletries for a full week, keep your most used kitchen utensils and cutlery separate, and make sure you have a clean set of sheets and a blanket for your bed. With these items on hand, you’ll be able to unpack a bit more comfortably at the pace that works best for you.
