Options for Local Sports in Rochester, Minnesota This Summer

We've pulled together a list of activities that are guaranteed to keep your family busy and making friends the entire season. 

For Adults:

1. Sandlot Volleyball

There are three leagues that play summer sandlot volleyball. Both the Tuesday and Wednesday leagues are coed. The Thursday league is for women only and is divided into Red and White. Registration for the sandlot volleyball season ended on April 19 with the season starting on May 23.

2. Softball

The summer softball season is undertaken as a partnership between Rochester Parks and Recreation and the Rochester Softball Association (RSA). A Summer Smash Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament is slated to take place during the weekend of July 21-23 at McQulllan Fields.

3. Kickball

Another league sport, registration for kickball typically ends in late July with play starting the following month. There are leagues playing on Monday and Thursday. 

For Youth:

Youth sports in Rochester are handled by a variety of different organizations. Don't let the name "youth sports" fool you as many of them offer activities for families and adults as well. A sampling of the offerings available is included below:

4. Martial Art Fitness Centers

Martial Art Fitness Centers provides a complete program of fitness for youth and adults. Aikido, Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu, Tai Chi and Hapkido are just a few of the martial art forms taught by their instructors. The organization also offers fitness boot camps for teen and adults as well as self-defense classes. 

5. Rochester Youth Fastpitch Softball Association (RYFSA)

The Rochester Youth Fastpitch Softball Association (RYFSA) offers area girls a variety of divisions to accommodate different ages and interests. There are both home and traveling teams with divisions beginning at 8U and up. 

6. Rochester Track Club

The Rochester Track Club offers information and resources for runners of all abilities. From families just starting out on the track lifestyle to competitive runners seeking to hone their skills, the Club's website that several races are upcoming this summer including the  Team RED Beer Mile Championship on July 20, the Rochester Women's Race 4 Mile -- a Rochester Grand Prix race -- on July 22 and the Eco Tri and 5K Trail Races Camp Victory on July 29. August races include two Rochester Grand Prix events -- the Douglas Trail Race on August 5 and the SCHEELS Healthy Human Race 5K/Half Marathon on August 26 -- as well as other races. 

7. Rochester Rowing Club of Minnesota

The Rochester Rowing Club (RRC) provides a range of activities for both youth and adults. Summer programs include those for high schoolers, middle school-aged youth and adults. In addition, the Club also offers a program that teaches junior rowers the mechanics of the sport.
