Beat-the-Heat-Rochester.jpgAs we get deeper into summer, the warmer temperatures may have you looking for some fun activities that will help keep you cool. We've put together a list of five ways you can beat the heat in Rochester, Minnesota and have a great time while doing it:

1. Spend the Afternoon Poolside

One of the most attractive amenities for Springs at South Broadway residents is our resort-style swimming pool. You can spend a carefree afternoon poolside with a good book or challenge yourself to burn some calories while swimming a few laps.

2. Take a "Staycation" at Chester Woods Beach

Did you know you can enjoy the beach without leaving Rochester? Venture over to the beach at Chester Woods Park on any hot day from now until Labor Day. The park is located at the headwaters of Bear Creek in the rugged bluff country of southeast Minnesota and the entrance fee is just $5 per vehicle per day. The sandy beach on Chester Lake features a beach house with showers and lockers, but no lifeguards.  If you're going to be spending an afternoon here, you might as well bring your fishing pole, too. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, panfish, and channel catfish.

3. Canoe or Kayak Down the Zumbro River

A unique way to experience Rochester is to take on the Zumbro River by canoe or kayak—but don't expect this to be an easy ride. The Zumbro River has a lively current, and paddlers need to keep an eye out for the snags they're likely to encounter.  Don't own a kayak or canoe? You can rent one from Silver Lake Boat and Bike Rentals.

4. Go Ice Skating

While ice skating would seem to be limited to the winter months, the recreation center in Rochester offers an indoor ice skating rink for enjoyment of the sport year-round. On a brutally hot summer day, the cool temperature at the ice rink is the ideal way to beat the heat. Admission to skate is $5 for adults, $4 for youth up to age 18, and free for children under 5. Skate rental is available for $2.
