The holiday season is the perfect time of year to celebrate with friends and family, and Des Moines won’t let you down when it comes to entertainment options. From fun with Santa and the kids to unique holiday-themed shopping experiences, you’ll find that Des Moines offers a little something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Here are a few interesting options that are worth considering:
The local Des Moines Bass Pro Shop is hosting another Santa’s Wonderland event this year between November 14th and December 24th. A variety of exciting activities are scheduled during the course of the event including magical tree lighting ceremonies, games galore, crafts and activity tables and caroler performances. There will be free cookies and hot chocolate to warm you up, and of course Santa will be there to greet guests and pose for photos with the kids.
All About HER Des Moines Holiday Expo
Spend a day at the Iowa Events Center on December 12th for their Holiday Expo and check out what hundreds of local vendors have to offer. Santa will be onsite between noon and 2 p.m. for photo opportunities, and DIY craft lessons will be available for everyone young and old. Local food booths can be expected, offering up tasty treats like pizza, cotton candy, and hot pretzels. Admission is only a dollar, and proceeds are donated to a local Iowa charity.
If beautiful twinkling lights get you in the holiday spirit, you’ll want to head down to Historic Valley Junction to participate in Jingle in the Junction on December 3rd and 10th between 5 and 9 p.m. You’ll have a chance to scope out more than 150,000 dazzling lights as well as indulge in free horse and pony rides up and down the streets of the Junction. Santa Claus will be making a special guest appearance with his reindeer, and carolers will fill the streets with traditional holiday songs.
Clear your schedule one day between now and November 29th to take part in the Festival of Trees and Lights at the Veterans Memorial Community Choice Credit Union. This Blank Children’s Hospital fundraiser features decorated Christmas trees, children’s activities, live entertainment, food service, and unique shopping opportunities for the adults. While not required, it’s a good idea to bring along a new toy to donate to the children’s hospital at the door.
