The men and women of the United States military make sacrifices every day to keep our country safe and free. Show your support for their service on Saturday, May 20, by taking part in one of these activities during Armed Forces Day.

1. Rice County Armed Forces Day

This eighth annual celebration is actually a two-day event on May 20 and 21. Activities include military reenactments and demonstrations, educational lectures and a 1940s fashion show. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Grounds open at 10 a.m. each day and close at 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 or $8 with a contribution of a non-perishable food item and $6 for kids 7-12.

2. Aliveo Military Museum

Take a trip back in time with a visit to the Aliveo Military Museum. Its mission is to educate the public about military history with a display of artifacts ranging from the Revolutionary War of our ancestors through the Persian Gulf wars of today. The collection even includes relics from the Zulu/British War. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and admission is free.

Recreate the experience of a World War II pilot with a Living History Flight through the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing. An experienced pilot will answer questions about the authentic aircraft and its history. Prices start at $95 and flights can be booked anytime. You can also visit the organization's on-site museum free of charge on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of America's entry into World War I, and the Minnesota Historical Society is honoring the occasion with a 5,000 square-foot exhibit showing how profoundly the "Great War" impacted life during those times. The fascinating collection of artifacts includes the glass bowl used to draw draft numbers, and interactive stations let you see draft registration cards of celebrities and "decode" the Zimmerman Telegram. WW1 America runs through September 4 during regular museum hours. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for kids 5-17.
