Today's Americans are far more mobile than they were in previous generations. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people in this country can expect to move nearly a dozen times over their lifespan.

If you're moving to another city on your own, whether it's by necessity or by choice, think of it as an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Here are some suggestions to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Before the Move

  • Do some research on your new location. Go beyond the obvious searches for shopping, services and other necessities and get a feel for the personality of the city. Put the word out on social media and look for Facebook pages and other sources where you can chat with current residents.
  • Work out a realistic timeline and budget. The more organized you are, the more focused your mind is, with less time to worry. But don't forget that the key work is "realistic." All major tasks are done with small steps. Biting off more than you can chew will simply increase your stress.
  • Bring your contact list up-to-date. Moving doesn't mean you have to give up all your current relationships. Trains, planes and automobiles go in both directions, so you can always visit, and you can never have too many people in your support system.

After the Move

  • Create your perfect sanctuary. When you live on your own, there's no arguing about what art to hang on the walls or whether to go traditional or contemporary. Our Springs luxury apartment homes come with designer touches such as hardwood-style flooring, modern appliances and ceiling fans, so you can indulge your dreams when decorating your new home.
  • Get out and about. Don't be surprised if you're tempted to use your apartment as a cocoon, but don't give in to the urge. Your freedom comes in handy when you can explore at your own pace, seeking out attractions such as museums or sports teams that particularly interest you.
  • Start meeting people. It doesn't have to be a difficult or uncomfortable process. After all, you've got nothing to lose! Meetup is a helpful site to find groups of people who share your interests, and volunteering is a great way to meet people and start feeling like a true member of the community. You may also want to consider classes and workshops through parks and rec or local community colleges.
  • Give yourself time. There's no magic switch you can flip to turn off your old life and turn on your new one. It's okay to feel blue occasionally. Be kind to yourself and you'll soon be back to your adventurous, enthusiastic self.

Our on-site management teams put on a number of events where residents can have fun socializing with their neighbors. Stop in and find out more about your wonderful new community at Springs Apartments!New Call-to-action
