1. El Loro Mexican Grill

If you can't find what you're looking for on El Loro's extensive menu, chances are you don't want it anyway. The appetizer list includes eight different types of nachos, including shrimp fajita and "chori" style with Mexican sausage. Lunch specials start at $7.99, while dinner combos begin at $11. Taqueria La Hacienda has its roots in Mercado Central, the popular food court and gathering place in South Minneapolis. Its success prompted owners Maria and Miguel Zagal to open two more shops, including this location. Their signature item, the taco al pastore, features marinated pork on a soft corn tortilla with cilantro, onions and salsa. On weekends they offer the classic dishes posole, a stew of hominy corn and pork, and menudo, or tripe soup.

Food at Las Tortillas is known for its authentic flavors and seasonings. If you're feeling adventurous, try one of the fusion dishes such as Surfer Burrito, filled with steak, French fries, sour cream and Oaxaca cheese. El Azteca has been serving its traditional, fresh Mexican cuisine to the area for more than 12 years. Customers rave about the made-to-order tableside guacamole. There are several vegetarian options as well as a kids' menu with Mexican and "gringo" meals.
